Why does the Israeli military get away with using civilians as human shields? Does it simply not get reported?

Firstly, Hamas are just as bad as the Israelis when it comes to using human shields (they fire rockets from residential areas and whilst some may support them not all do, and they chose these areas because it makes them difficult to find so civilians are targeted, which is wrong) - both sides commit horrible crimes and are just as awful as each other. Why do many of Israel's actions get ignored or excused? Well, mainly because they have the USA stopping any attempt to impose sanctions or do anything to prevent this sort of atrocity. Which is almost as bad as the USA committing those atrocities itself.
